City of Shawnee

Johnson Drive Streetscape Project

The City is moving forward with an exciting project to transform the Downtown area into a safer, more engaging destination. The 2024-2025 Streetscape Project focuses on revitalizing Johnson Drive between Nieman Road and Barton Street with a design that supports community events and everyday activities.

This two-phase project will address aging infrastructure while enhancing Downtown Shawnee’s appeal. Key upgrades include:

  • Modernizing electrical systems
  • Improving pedestrian safety
  • Creating an inviting space for gatherings

Proper safety protocols will be taken to keep Downtown Shawnee visitor-friendly during construction.

Bringing People Together
The centerpiece of the project is a redesigned pedestrian plaza that will offer a welcoming space for residents and visitors to connect, whether it’s during Moonlight Market or a casual meet-up before visiting Downtown businesses. New features, including outlets for string lights and uplighting tree wells, will make the plaza accessible and dynamic.

Promoting Safety
The project includes significant investments in pedestrian safety. Sidewalk repairs and a new pedestrian warning signal for drivers will enhance walkability, making Downtown more accessible for everyone. These changes will create an environment that residents and visitors can explore safely on foot.

Shawnee’s Vision
The project aligns with Imagine Shawnee, a city-wide strategic visioning process. One pillar of Imagine Shawnee is creating a safe, sustainable, inclusive, and interactive community. With its thoughtful design elements and focus on functionality, the project will enhance the charm of Downtown Shawnee, making it a more inviting destination.
